Ridge Manor at a glance
- Springs zone: when we checked DEP's map data on October 28, 2026, central Ridge Manor plotted outside both the Weeki Wachee and the Homosassa–Chassahowitzka springs BMAP areas (DEP GIS).
- Sewer: central Ridge Manor falls inside a mapped Hernando County Utilities water-and-sewer service area (county GIS), and the county runs the Ridge Manor Water Reclamation Facility on Kettering Road.
- Soils: a patchwork of dry, sandy uplands and wetter flatwoods and depressions.
- Permits: septic permits come from the Florida Department of Health in Hernando County.
Sewer vs. septic in Ridge Manor
Hernando County Utilities broke ground in June 2026 on an expansion of the Ridge Manor Water Reclamation Facility at 5095 Kettering Road. The county says the new plant will support the area's growing population and improve reliability during hurricanes and other emergencies (county announcement). Being inside a utility service area does not mean every street has a sewer line, though. Some lots, especially rural ones, may still use septic. To check a specific address, call Hernando County Utilities at (352) 754-4037 or look up the septic permit in the health department's records.
If sewer does become available to an existing septic home, Florida law generally requires connection within 365 days of the utility's written notice. Our septic-to-sewer guide covers how that works.
Soils and water table
USDA soil survey data around central Ridge Manor shows two very different settings (Web Soil Survey):
- Candler fine sand on the sandy ridges is excessively drained. Water moves through it fast, and USDA rates it "very limited" for drainfields because of poor filtering capacity and seepage. Effluent can reach groundwater with little treatment, so a correctly sized, well-maintained system matters.
- Sparr fine sand is somewhat poorly drained, with a wet-season water table USDA puts at about 2 feet below the surface. Nearby Myakka flatwoods soils run wetter still, and depressional soils can pond. Drainfields on these soils are more likely to need fill or a mound.
The practical upshot is that two Ridge Manor homes a short drive apart can need very different repairs. A site evaluation, not a neighbor's quote, sets the price.
Springs-zone rules
Because central Ridge Manor plotted outside the springs BMAP areas on DEP's map, the springs nitrogen rules for new systems and repairs do not appear to apply there. Standard health department permitting still applies to any new system, repair or modification. Check your exact parcel on DEP's springs septic requirements map, because the boundaries run parcel by parcel.
Help paying for upgrades: Hernando County's Septic Upgrade Incentive Program is closed because its grant funding has been spent (county page). The county says it will post an update there if more funding is secured.
Local considerations
- The Withlacoochee State Trail's Ridge Manor Trailhead and the Croom area of the Withlacoochee State Forest are close by (DEP trail plan). Homes near low, wet ground in this area deserve a close look at drainfield placement.
- Larger rural lots often pair a septic system with a private well. Florida law requires at least 75 feet between a septic system permitted before June 21, 2022 and a private drinking-water well (s. 381.0065, F.S.).
- In dry, fast-draining sand, a wet spot or odor over the drainfield is a stronger warning sign than it would be in wetter soil, so have it checked promptly.
Practical tips
- Look up your septic permit and site plan on the health department's eBridge records (username PUBLIC, password Public, file cabinet HERNANDODOH) via the Florida Department of Health in Hernando County, 352-540-6812.
- Check your exact parcel on DEP's springs septic requirements map before you price a repair.
- Pump on schedule. Many households need a pump-out every three to five years, and it is the cheapest protection for the drainfield.
- Before hiring anyone, check their registration in the DEP septic contractor lookup.
